Good morning! Today I wanted to share more about my decision to become a Beautycounter consultant. A couple months ago I took the plunge and signed up to be a consultant after using their products for the better part of a year. I have been linking the Beautycounter products I love in a few of my posts but I hadn’t yet made a formal announcement about my decision. I wanted to talk about what made me switch to cleaner products, why I chose Beautycounter, and also recommend some of my other favorite brands and products.
Why I Made the Switch
I honestly never paid much attention to what was in my beauty products until I got pregnant with Benjamin. I knew of the general guidelines of avoiding salicylic acid and using retinol while pregnant and breastfeeding but other than that, I did not know which ingredients were considered safe and which were considered unsafe. I just assumed if something was unsafe, it wouldn’t be on the market. After coming across a few blog posts and articles on the lack of regulation in the beauty industry, I wanted to dive deeper into what went into my beauty products I use daily.
I started doing some research – mainly through EWG and Think Dirty. Both websites/apps list the ingredients and rate products on a numeric scale. They have also color-coded the scores and ingredients for a quick rundown. I downloaded each app to my phone for quick resources while shopping. I prefer Think Dirty because I can search for product suggestions and read reviews all in one app! I looked up all of the products I use daily and was surprised to see they contained endocrine disruptive chemicals, carcinogens, and allergens.
I choose to buy most of my products from Beautycounter because I love their mission, advocacy, and the quality of their products. They are a certified B-Corp which means they balance business with purpose. With every decision, Beautycounter takes into consideration the impact on the environment, employees, customers, suppliers, and community. Beautycounter’s mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. I don’t mind paying department store prices because the products are high quality and I know my money is going towards a company working for a great cause. They are transparent with their ingredient list and even use a Never List which includes the 1800 harmful ingredients you’ll never see in Beautycounter’s products. (Sidenote: Did you know the EU bans 1400 ingredients and the US only bans 30?) Each year they send top consultants to Washington D.C. to advocate for stricter beauty regulations. Lastly, I love a company that will stand behind its products. While I haven’t had a product I don’t like, I feel comfortable knowing Beautycounter has a 60-day no questions asked return policy.
- Mineral sunscreen mist
- Charcoal Mask
- Overnight Resurfacing Peel
- Dew Skin
- Sheer Lipstick (I like ‘Terra’ and ‘Rose’)
Products I Have My Eye On…
How I Switched while on a Budget
After realizing most of my products scored high on with Think Dirty, it was hard not to run out and replace them all! In an effort to not be wasteful and to give my wallet a break, I chose to switch to cleaner options once I’ve used up what I own. For starters, I deep cleaned my bathroom cabinets and replaced any expired product and focused primarily on replacing my skincare products with cleaner options. It’s a slow process but it helps not having to spend hundreds of dollars at once.
In addition to slowly replacing my products to space out purchases, Beautycounter offers a membership program which can be quite beneficial! Before I became a consultant, I was a Band of Beauty Member. For $29, you get the following benefits:
- 10% Product Credit with any order
- Free shipping on orders over $100 +
- Special member offers throughout the year
- Free gift upon enrollment and with a purchase of $50
It was recommended to me to become a Band of Beauty Member if I was planning to purchase more than $100 of product and I’m so glad I did. With the above benefits, it’s really a great deal! I would wait until I was running low on a few products and then make my purchase to make sure I qualified for free shipping. With the product credit, free product, and free shipping, I found the membership fee quickly paid for itself.
Beautycounter also offers Skincare Collections and Regimens where you can purchase a group of skincare products at a discount. Not sure which products will work for you? Feel free to send me a message or take the skincare quiz. I currently use the Countermatch Collection for combo skin and aging prevention.
What If I Don’t Like the Products?
Beautycounter offers a generous return policy. If you don’t like the product, you can send the unused portion back within 60 days from the ship date.
Other Clean Beauty Brands I Love
- FitGlow Beauty – I have a few lip serums and I love the colors in this eye palette
- SheaMoisture – I use this bodywash and love that it can also be found at Target
- Ilia Beauty – I love this eye shadow palette.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out through email (stephaniegeweke [at] gmail [dot] com) or instagram DM. I also have limited samples of the skincare regimens that I’d be happy to do a no-contact local drop off for Tucson residents and ship out for non-local peeps!
If you made it this far, I wanted to take the time to thank you for reading and supporting my blog! With my paralegal work slowing down due to the virus, I have more time to devote to this space. I’m looking forward to sharing more content with you all!
